"Creative activism and urban art are increasingly being used as an instrument to collectively re-appropriate the urban space and thus articulate urban belong and citizenship from below."
Activism used to be a concept related to protest or even violence. However, arts are also serve as a medium for social activism. The correlation creative activism and urban arts are still being exaggerated due to changes in cities. Cities are experience significant transformation process which brings profound impact on the spatial practices, communities and neighborhood. Therefore individuals or groups are using public space to illustrating their emotions and voices---their frustration about unexpected changes to their life. Those changes affected their sense of belonging of their neighborhood or communities. People’s sense of belonging comes from their background and their lifestyle. Those urban changes disrupt their lifestyle and results in their negative feelings.
Creative activism is such a good strategy for “those who are widely excluded from social, political, cultural, and economic participation.” A good example is street arts such as graffiti. Since the middle of 1960s, the controversy about graffiti and other forms of street or urban arts bring changes from merely aesthetic views to interpretation of the expression from social, political and economical perspective. Those underlying message is what really attracts me. When I think about my own research question, I also care about those underlying messages behind the stage performance created by artist with minority background. Nowadays, street or urban arts is not the only way for creative activism. Stage performance also does the same job. However, besides the messages or voices of artists themselves, I am also interested in how audiences interpret those artworks. For me, personally, street arts leave me a more negative impression rather than positive. This might be due to how the message is being delivered or what are those messages. Urban arts are used in recent social protest movement. Because of the anxiety, anger and other strong emotions, some of them are too negative for me to give me a good impression. This is one of the reason why I prefer to take into the creative activism in stage performance. Moreover, the stage performance is using human itself as a medium to express people themselves. This is more accessible compared with other type of artworks. I hope I can find different perspectives about using creative activism by taking look at the stage performance. I am looking forward for future researching about how stage performance used as creative strategies to escape from invisibility.
