Interview: Betty and I went to the university way to start our interview. It didn’t go very well at first. We had a hard time to find appropriate people to interview. At first 15 minute, we asked about 6 people but none of them was willing to accept the interview. People, walking on the street, were quite busy and really eager to go to their destinations. Also we sometimes hesitated because we were nervous to ask people to stop. We then changed our strategy that we went to the Starbuck and bought us a coffee. I wanted to take this break to relax and find some people to interview in the Starbuck. It is more likely for people who enjoyed a coffee to accept interview because people, who purchased a coffee, usually means they have some free time and they are in good mood. Just like what we think, this worked out much better than we thought. The first person we interviewed is about 50-year-old white man, who looked like a staff working at UW. He was reading the newspaper and enjoying his coffee at table. After we expressed our purposes, he invited us to sit down and talked. He tried to interpret this question in a very academic and professional way by explain roots behinds the racial issue in Europe versus in United States. He stated that the racial issue in U.S is due to the slavery history while the racial issue in Europe mostly is due to immigration. The racial issue is still a big topic in U.S. The second person we interview is an Asian American girl from Hawaii. Her opinions are more related to the contemporary era. She thought that minorities are more likely to be unemployed or get into personal budget crisis. She pointed out that most of homeless people are actually from minor racial groups.
From this assignment, I found myself tend to interview people who looks like in a happy mood and very friendly. I intentionally tried to do this interview with more diversity by trying to talk to people with different gender, different age and different race. I was feeling awkward when people rejected me even though I had an idea that other would do that. I was being very nervous at first but with time passing by, it gets better. However, I still need more courage and confidence to talk with a stranger in street. Observation: I sat at the 41st and university way bus stop alone. I closed my eyes and tried to focus on the smell around me. I can notice some very pleasant smell such as scent from tomato sauce, coffee bean and grilled sausage. I never pay attention to these smells before. I spend some time to distinguish what are those scents from when I closed my eyes. But I also noticed the smell of gasoline and dust especially I heard there are vehicles passing by. I opened my eyes and tried to observe the bus stop and environment around. There is a light pole just next to the bus stop. On the top of the light pole is labeled “Shultzy’s”. I didn’t’realize what this mean until I found out that nearby are Solstice Café and a restaurant called Shultzy’s Sausage. I never went to these restaurants before and had no idea about their names. The booth of the bus stop is dark green but the ceiling is pale grey. There is small label said “No Littering”, which is not very noticeable. The booth looks old and has a lot of scuff on it. The windows is dirty and blurred because there are a lot of tapes on it.
